Vortrag: Chris Coffman: Toward Transfeminist Theories of Embodiment: (Re)Writing the Lacanian Sinthôme

Über den Vortrag

Lacanian psychoanalytic theorists have only recently begun to understand transgender embodiments in affirmative rather than pathologizing ways. The concept of the sinthôme has been crucial to this change in approach. This lecture will trace the sinthôme from its initial appearance in the writings of Jacques Lacan through its feminist reinflection by visual artist Bracha Ettinger and its recent reworkings by trans-affirmative psychoanalysts Sheila Cavanagh, Patricia Gherovici, and Oren Gozlan. This work has been vitally important in understanding transsexuals’ requests to transition as healthy and life-affirming rather than as symptoms of psychosis, as Catherine Millot notoriously claims.

Coffman will build on this line of trans-affirmative psychoanalytic thinking to argue that the sinthôme can also be adapted to theorize forms of transgender embodiment that are unique to non-binary and genderqueer people. These subjective experiences of embodiment extend beyond the body’s material contours. Supported by structures of sexual difference that need not be anchored by the Lacanian phallus, they offer alternatives to psychoanalytic feminisms predicated on the cisgender female body. Gastdozentin für Feministische Theorie und Queer Theory: Chris Coffmann 
Chris Coffman lehrt als Professorin für Anglistik an der University of Alaska Fairbanks und ist dem dort angesiedelten Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program affiliert. In ihrer Forschung greift sie auf psychoanalytische, feministische und Queer Theorien zurück, um Werke aus dem 20. und 21. Jahrhundert aus den Bereichen Literatur, Visual Art und Film zu analysieren. Ihre erste Monographie – Insane Passions: Lesbianism and Psychosis in Literature and Film – erschien im Dezember 2006 bei Wesleyan University Press; ihre zweite – Gertrude Stein's Transmasculinity – im Juni 2018 bei Edinburgh University Press. Auch über psychoanalytisch informierte queere und Transgender Theorie, über queeren Film, Franz Kafkas Der Prozess, James Joyce Ulysses, Monique Truong's The Book of Salt und Virginia Woolf's Orlando hat sie Aufsätze veröffentlicht. Vormals Teilnehmerin eines NEH (National Endowment for Democracy)-Seminars, arbeitet sie derzeit an Beiträgen über Woolfs The Waves und Orlando sowie an ihrem Fulbright-Freud-Forschungsprojekt mit dem Titel Queer Traversals. Während ihres Aufenthaltes in Österreich hält Chris Coffmann eine Lehrveranstaltung über „Queer Theories“ für das Masterstudium Gender Studies an der Universität Wien.
